Correct identification is an important first step in pest control.
Correct identification of a hobo spider can be difficult and really requires a microscope to examine the reproductive structures of the spider. That being said here are some things to look for:
You may not be able to know if a spider is a hobo for sure or not with these keys, but you can usually identify when a spider is not a hobo spider.
Hobo spiders can be found outside in grass, gardens, ornamental plants and trees, along foundations, log piles, under rocks and lawn ornaments, etc.
When indoors they can be found in tubs and sinks or running along the floor.

Hobo spiders do not cause necrotic lesions in humans and should be considered beneficial. They are very common indoors between August and October.

Nocturnal, meaning they are awake at night

Minimize nesting habitat for hobo spiders around property such as rocks, and logs.
Seal exterior cracks and crevices and install tight-fitting door sweeps at the base o fall exterior doors.
Change exterior lighting to sodium vapor bulbs. Vacuum, step on, or smash individual spiders that enter buildings.
Catch and release (with a glass jar) spiders found indoors.
Use pest monitors to capture invading spiders, especially between August and October.
