Bed Bug Biology

Understanding bed bug biology can help homeowners recognize early warning signs and take preventive action. Bed bugs feed on blood for 3 to 12 minutes at a time, up to three times per week. Females lay 2 to 3 eggs daily, which hatch within 7 to 10 days. With a steady food source, young bed bugs can reach adulthood in one to two months.

Bed bugs typically live between 6 months and 1.5 years, and some can survive without feeding for 6 to 12 months. While they prefer human blood, they are opportunistic and will feed on animals if necessary.

Causes of Infestations

Bed bugs are often transported through luggage, clothing, and personal belongings while traveling. Secondhand furniture is another common source. Bed bugs frequently hide in seams, cushions, and frames, so always inspect used items carefully before bringing them inside.

Shared living spaces, such as apartments and dorms, increase the risk of bed bug spread. An infestation in one unit can quickly affect others, so all residents should take preventive measures. Clutter creates ideal hiding spots, making it harder to detect and manage bed bugs. Keeping areas clean and organized helps reduce potential harborage zones.

Thorn Pest Solutions Davis County bed bug prevention treatments in Davis County, UT. Our Bed Bug Treatments

Bed Bug Dogs
Thorn - Davis County bed bug prevention treatment experts.

At Thorn, we have a team of highly trained K-9s to help locate bed bugs. For more than 10 years, our certified bed bug dogs have played a vital role in identifying infestations that are often difficult to detect by visual inspection alone. Because bed bugs are small, elusive, and adept at hiding, K-9 detection improves inspection accuracy and efficiency.

A trained bed bug dog can inspect an average-sized room in just 2-3 minutes and detect the scent of live bed bugs and viable eggs with precision. Our technicians confirm each alert from our dogs before any treatment begins. Our K-9s are trained using live bed bugs to keep their detection skills sharp. We love our dogs! Watch us in action.

Chemical Treatments
Thorn Pest Solutions Davis County has many safe preventitive bed bug treatments.

Thorn provides professional chemical bed bug treatments in Davis County, UT. Because bed bug control requires precise application and thorough inspection, our licensed specialists ensure direct contact with as many bed bugs and eggs as possible. Each treatment plan typically includes four targeted applications of carefully selected, rotated chemical products, along with desiccant dusts, to eliminate bed bugs at every stage of the life cycle. After all treatments, we perform follow-ups to confirm population extermination.

Heat Treatments
Thorn Pest Solutions Davis County - bed bug prevention in Davis County, UT.

Heat treatments are a highly effective method that use specialized heaters and fans to raise air temperatures throughout the treatment area to 135°F. Our technicians monitor the process closely, checking temperatures every 30 minutes and rotating furniture and belongings to ensure that all areas reach the thermal death point for bed bugs (121.7°F).

This method typically eliminates all life stages (eggs, nymphs, and adults) in a single treatment. However, we conduct post-treatment follow-up to confirm that no pests remain. We often use insecticide applications and desiccant dusts alongside heat treatment. This approach helps prevent reinfestation and provides long-term bed bug control in residential and commercial settings.

Aprehend Biopesticide Treatments
Bed bug prevention experts in Davis County, UT.

At Thorn, we offer Aprehend Biopesticide treatments as part of our advanced bed bug control services when appropriate. This innovative treatment uses a natural fungal spore formulation designed specifically for bed bug elimination. When bed bugs come into contact with surfaces treated with Aprehend, the spores adhere to their bodies and kill them within several days. Because the spores can transfer between bed bugs through contact, the treatment effectively targets both active insects and those hiding in nearby areas.

Our technicians apply 2-inch-wide bands of Aprehend around areas where bed bugs hide, including furniture, bed frames, electrical outlets, wall hangings, and baseboards. The treatment can remain effective for up to three months, protecting against re-infestation. We often pair Aprehend applications with desiccant dust to ensure comprehensive control. Following treatment, our team conducts follow-up inspections to verify complete elimination and confirm that your home remains free of bed bugs.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Bed bugs are brought in by a houseguest that has bed bugs.
  • Used furniture is brought in that has bed bugs.
  • You travel and stay somewhere that has bed bugs.
  • Bed bugs coming from an adjacent unit in an apartment or multi-family housing.

Cimex lectularius

There is only one species of bed bug in Utah and that is the common bed bug Cimex lectularius. There are however other insects in the same family (cimicidae) in Utah that look similar to a bed bug like the swallow bug, bat bug, and Mexican chicken bug. Most other cimicids are associated with birds and bats.

Correct Identification is Key

Make sure your “bed bugs” are getting properly identified as treatments are very different for these insects. Bed bugs are invasive and typically much harder to control. Swallow bugs and bat bugs typically require removing or excluding the bats and birds and then a simple pest control treatment around entry points. Swallow bugs and bat bugs typically do not have the high resistance to modern pesticides like a bed bug and are fairly easy to control once their food source is gone.

Just as a disclaimer, do not treat bats and birds/nests directly with pesticides. This is not necessary and may harm the animals.

Bed bugs are very common in Utah. We treat over 500 infestations here in Utah annually. Eliminating tens of thousands of bed bugs and helping Utahns sleep better.

Public Health Threat

Bed bugs are a public health threat as they can have a major impact on your health and well-being like sleepless nights, paranoia, anemia, uncomfortable bites, and allergic reactions.

Where can they be found?

Bed bugs are more prevalent in multi-family housing but they are found in single family homes as well. Bed bugs only live indoors and have to be brought in to a space. We also find bed bugs in offices, schools, and anywhere people spend a significant amount of time. Bed bugs want to be near their food (people).

YOU!

You. They feed on blood, so they are attracted to and are very adept at living with humans. That being said they are not coming from the outdoors and must be carried or brought in to a home or business. That can be on people coming to stay with you or being brought in on something like used furniture.

Attractants!

Once they are in your home they are attracted to a few things like the CO2 that you exhale and your body heat. They use these cues to position themselves close to you in undisturbed areas like under your box spring, in your bed frame, or behind your headboard.

Bites

Not everyone is allergic and people have different reactions to bed bug bites. You cannot identify bed bugs by just bites, but they are an indication and if you think you are getting bites from bed bugs you should hire an experienced pest control expert to provide an inspection.

Black spotting on bed or furniture

Bed bugs leave a dark spot when they defecate. It is smooth and black. This black spotting is often found in cracks and crevices of a wooden headboard or bed frame, edges of a box spring, mattress, bed skirt, or the piping or edges of furniture.

Shed skins

As bed bugs grow they shed their skin. They do this 5 times before they are a full adult. These shed skins may be difficult to find but they are definitely a sign that you have bed bugs. The sheds look like a shell of a bed bug and are light tan in color.

Bugs

One of the most common ways that people identify that they have bed bugs is by finding a bug or multiple bugs. Bed bugs are very light tan when they first hatch and turn a rusty red color as adults. Adults are about the same size as an apple seed.
