Heat Treatment Process

A heat treatment is a process where we bring heaters into infested areas and raise the temperature to 135 degrees Fahrenheit. We let that heat penetrate all the furniture and items in the area. Bed bugs and their eggs die in under one minute at 121.7 degrees.

Wireless Probes to Measure Temperature

During a heat treatment is is critical to measure textures to make sure everthing gets hot inside and out. If everything gets hot, all the bed bugs are dead. We use state of the art thermal imaging cameras that help us see exactly how hot things are and if we have any cold spots. We utilize wireless temperature probes. These probes give us real time temperature read outs and help ensure a thorough heat.

Item Rotation and High Powered Fans

During the heat treatment we enter the heated space to rotate and move items to sure heat penetrates everything. The more we can rotate and move items the better the heat will soak into everything and ensure lethal temperatures are reached. High powered fans also help us heat the space thoroughly. The fans help push the heat into and around the entire space.

Hotels, apartments, and other commercial properties receive a 6 month warranty.

How should I prepare for a heat treatment?

Find all of your heat sensitive items. We can give you a list to help.

Don’t self treat before we arrive.

Don’t remove items from the space unless they are being disposed of.

Don’t take bed bugs with you when you leave.

How much does it cost to get heat treatment for bed bugs?

Treatment is usually priced between $1,000 and $2,000 for our services. This one-time treatment can eliminate bed bugs and their eggs. The best thing to do is get started with an inspection so the Thorn team can provide an estimate based on your business or residential needs.

Can I turn my heat up to kill bed bugs?

Unfortunately no. We’ve seen people try, but most don’t have the tools needed to heat a space thoroughly to the thermal death point of 121.7 degrees Fahrenheit. Our bed bug experts work to heat a room efficiently, and use thermal imaging cameras and temperature probes to ensure that affected areas reach the minimum temperature required to kill bed bugs and their eggs.

Can you heat treat your own house for bed bugs?

No, it’s not likely that you’ll be able to safely heat a space to a high enough temperature to properly kill bed bugs and their eggs—and believe us, we’ve seen people try. Heat treatments are not effective if you’re simply turning on a space heater. They require a knowledge of bed bug behavior, airflow, and treatment techniques.

The experts at Thorn use specialized equipment including high-powered fans, wireless temperature probes, and thermal imaging cameras as part of a heat treatment to monitor temperatures and ensure everything gets to a minimum 121.7 degrees Fahrenheit.

Can bed bugs survive after heat treatment?

A bed bug and its eggs cannot survive a temperature of 121.7 degrees Fahrenheit, and because some items can be hard to treat, our skilled teams work to ensure that rooms reach 130 degrees and use thermal imaging cameras to ensure that all items are meeting the targeted temperature.

Heat treatments are not always 100% effective, but Thorn offers 6-month and 1-year warranties on its heat treatment for bed bugs. Contact us today to learn more.
