Why are Cockroaches Hard to Get Rid of?

By McKenzie • Nov 1st 2023

Roaches are evolutionarily engineered to survive almost anything, including something 900 times its body weight being placed on top of it. Besides being a biological marvel, it makes cockroaches a major pain. Unless you have the help of a cockroach exterminator, they can be almost impossible to eradicate.

Imagine you’re a knight wearing a suit of armor. You have the different pieces overlapping to protect you. It’s flexible, too, letting you spring and move through tight spaces.

Now imagine a jet dropping on top of you. Or a cruise ship’s anchor. A literal tank on your chest. An elephant — or 14 of them. That’s what it’s like being a cockroach.

It sounds impossible, but it isn’t! Roaches are evolutionarily engineered to survive almost anything, including something 900 times its body weight being placed on top of it. Besides being a biological marvel, it makes cockroaches a major pain. Unless you have the help of a cockroach exterminator, they can be almost impossible to eradicate.

Cockroaches are Tough from the Inside Out

Cockroaches are the ultimate survivors. Stomping on them doesn’t work because their strong exoskeleton lets them withstand immense pressure. The plates in that exoskeleton are connected by flexible membranes, which also allow the roaches to flatten themselves for extra protection. This makes it easy for them to fit through tiny cracks, as well.

What about drowning? Cockroaches can hold their breath for half an hour. Beheading them doesn’t work, either, because they breathe through holes in their body. Even without a head, they can live for a month without food and a week without water.

Your next instinct may be to reach for a pesticide, but that’s not a great idea, either. Cockroaches scurry away too quickly to aim properly, leaving a mess of poisonous spray behind for you to clean up. There’s also a good chance the cockroach is already immune to it. Their stomachs have enzymes that protect them from poisons, and they can pass that immunity to their offspring. And, because they have lifespans of a hundred days and replicate quickly, you could soon be facing an infestation of cockroaches immune to common pesticides.

Cockroaches are Opportunists

Roaches can sneak into your home through small cracks you didn’t know existed. From there, they’ll stick to dark places during the day, coming out to find food when you’re not around. Dirty dishes in the sink, standing water and pet food can all attract cockroaches. But they’re not picky and may even eat things like cardboard to survive.

It’s hard to tell how many cockroaches are in your home or business. They multiply quickly, and some females can reproduce on their own. Thankfully, there are a few things you can do yourself to help get rid of an infestation. Try sealing the cracks you see in your home’s exterior, keep the counters clean and put pet food away at night. However, this on its own might not be enough to get rid of them, which is why it’s more effective to contact a cockroach exterminator.

How Thorn Can Help

With decades of experience, Thorn biologists know how cockroaches tick – and how to get rid of them. Our team will inspect your home to see where cockroaches are coming in and where they’re living. From there, we can craft a strategy for your home or business.

Pesticides you find at the store probably won’t work on cockroaches and can even be dangerous to your family and pets. At Thorn Pest Solutions, we pride ourselves on using the best solutions that are also natural and safe.

Cockroaches can thrive in practically any situation. Their strong exoskeletons make them hard to squish, their speed makes it hard to hit them with poisons and enzymes in their gut allow them to digest materials toxic to other critters. If you need a cockroach exterminator, contact Thorn today. We will help eliminate an infestation and prevent cockroaches from returning. Call today!
