Bumble Bee Identification and Control in Utah
Correct identification is an important first step in pest control.

Bumble bees are 1/4 to 1 inch long and are stout. They are fuzzy and hairy in appearance. Their coloring consists of black and yellow, some with white and orange markings.
Bumble bees are a social insect. Their colony dies off every fall, but fertilized queens will overwinter usually underground. Queens start new colonies every spring that will grow throughout the summer months. Their nests can be found in old rodent burrows, holes, grass clumps, etc.

Bumble bees are important pollinators and are protected under the Pollinator Protection Act.
Bees are a valuable resource; consider contacting your local beekeepers association for hive or swarm extraction.
How To Prevent
Monitor for bumble bee nests in early summer through the fall.
Minimize nesting habitat around property by caving in old rodent burrows, sealing exterior cracks and crevices, holes in trees, all voids, removing grass clumps, etc.
Purchase and use a bee veil, suit and gloves.
Never plug entrance holes to nest (if in a structural void)!
Apply a non-repellent insecticidal dust in and 6 inches around entrance hole(s) at night.
Because of honey pots in the nest, nests should be removed and voids filled ore sealed to prevent reinfestation or the presence of other pests.
