How To Identify an Oriental Cockroach

Oriental cockroaches are dark brown to black in color with wings that are not as long as the body or appear absent.

Where Do They Come From

Oriental cockroaches are also found in basements, cellars, crawl spaces, sewers, near drains, leaky pipes and faucets and under refrigerators and sinks.

They are also referred to as “water bugs” because they can be found in cool damp , dark areas. Infestations are common in the spring time through fall and very commonly come up and out of floor drains.

You can find oriental cockroaches under the sink, behind kitchen cabinets, under countertops, behind the fridge, or near drains and pipes.

How To Keep Cockroaches Away

Oriental cockroaches are typically coming from the outside or up from drains. To prevent these cockroaches make sure that buildings are well sealed and your are addressing the exterior as well as the interior.

  • Make sure doors have good sweeps and do not allow cockroach entry.
  • Make sure utility lines are well sealed.
  • Prevent cockroaches from entering through drains.
  • Improve sanitation by deep cleaning infested areas.
  • Utilize cockroach traps to locate harborage locations and infestation levels
  • Vacuum (with a HEPA filter) existing roaches and egg cases.
  • Dispose of trash regularly to remove food and shelter sources. 
  • Utilize cockroach baits on the exterior of the building.
  • Use cockroach baits on the interior.
  • Treat around window and doors.
