How to Identify a Skunk

Skunks are about the size of a house cat. They have black fur and tow broad white stripes running the length of the body. Spotted skunks are black with white markings and about half the size of a house cat.

Skunks release an odorous spray when disturbed or centered. They can spray a distance of 8-15 feet.

What Are Their Nesting Habits

Skunks build dens in brush piles open irrigation pipes, storage areas, sheds, under structures, etc.

They are solitary animals, except for mating and during winter.

Skunks are most active at night.

Why Are They Significant

Skunks are known carriers of diseases such as rabbits and a variety of parasites. They damage lawns and athletic field by digging for food; this can look like bare patches and small cone-shaped holes. Skunks have an odors defensive spray.
